    Mission: The Constitution of the State of Mississippi requires the Board of Mississippi Levee Commissioners to operate and maintain the Mainline Mississippi River Levee in the counties of Bolivar, Washington, Issaquena, Sharkey, Warren, and Humphreys. The Mississippi Legislature also authorizes the Board to cooperate with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the construction and maintenance of the Big Sunflower River and Tributaries Project in these same counties.

    It is the Board's mission to carry out its obligation to the State of Mississippi and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Vicksburg District Corps of Engineers has presented an award for "Outstanding Maintenance of Flood Control Projects" to the Board each year since 1959.

    Mission: Located on Mississippi State University's campus, the Institute administers and coordinates research programs dealing with water and related resources. Its activities are developed in close consultation and collaboration with leading water resources officials within the State. The Institute's purpose is to provide a coordinated research and development program that contributes to the solution of water and related land use problems in Mississippi, the region, and the nation.

    The Institute's goals are to:
    1. Provide a center of expertise in water and related land problems and serve as a repository of knowledge for use in education, research, planning, and community service;
    2. serve public and private interests to conserve, develop and use water resources;
    3. provide training opportunities in higher education whereby skilled professionals become available to serve government and private sector alike;
    4. assist planning and regulatory bodies at the local, state, regional, and federal levels;
    5. communicate research findings to potential users in forms that encourage quick comprehension and direct application to water-related problems;
    6. assist state agencies to develop and maintain a state water management plan;
    7. facilitate and stimulate planning and management that:
      • deal with water policy issues;
      • support state water agencies' missions with research on problems encountered and expected;
      • n provide water planning and management organizations with tools to increase efficiency and effectiveness of water planning and management.

    Mission: The Board of Levee Commissioners for the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta is charged with the responsibility to erect, maintain, and operate a system of levees to protect the people and property of the Delta from damages from high waters of the Mississippi River; to direct the necessary activities attendant to the threat of high water and flood damages from interior rivers and streams; and to furnish the local cooperation required for certain flood control and drainage projects of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

    Recreational Facilities: Public fishing areas in Tunica and Coahoma counties at various locations along the mainline levee.

    Geographic Area Served: DeSoto, Tunica, Coahoma, Quitman, Tallahatchie, Sunflower, Leflore, Holmes, Humphreys and Yazoo counties.
